Face Suit Cards

Face cards

Whereas modern playing cards have three face (or ‘court’) cards (jack, queen and king), tarot cards have four (page, knight, queen and king). The jack in a modern playing card deck is an amalgamation of the page and the knight. Each of the four face cards has a different symbolic meaning. Pages are associated with insight and opportunity, knights with challenge and determination, queens with nurturing and advice, and kings with ambition and power. The face cards in each suit have their own particular character traits too:
Swords
Page: clever, perceptive, creative and physically fit, but restless by nature
Knight : a highly active person who’s always on the go but is easily bored and frequently changes his plans
Queen: this fast-thinking queen possesses acerbic wit, and although she appears distant and frosty, she may be lonely at heart
King: moralistic and righteous, this man stands up for his beliefs and always acts in a professional manner
Chalices
Page: someone who always has his head in the clouds, dreaming and fantasising, and sensitive by nature
Knight: passionate, romantic, faithful and caring, this king has a lot of love to give but is often overwhelmed by emotion
Queen: a real mother hen, this queen likes to look after her brood, with comforting advice and reassuring insight
King: warm-hearted and kind, this father-figure loves children and gives sound and helpful advice
Pentacles
Page: very practical with his hands, this page is good at making and mending things and is fascinated by how things work, with a real thirst for learning and knowledge
Knight: a hard-working, determined young man with a great future ahead of him and the ability to succeed
Queen: a shrewd businesswoman who knows how to manage money but always acts with generosity, kindness and integrity
King: the epitome of common sense and maturity, this king has a good head for business and finance and knows how to look after his affairs
Wands
Page: full of the joys of life, this bright and cheery character likes to keep himself occupied and enjoys the company of others
Knight: a wanderer who loves to move around and discover new places, often acting purely on impulse and therefore sometimes unreliable
Queen: elegant and sophisticated yet kind and down-to-earth, this queen represents harmony and equilibrium
King: a born leader with the ability to inspire others, this king commands a great deal of respect from everyone around him
